The heated towel rail is the smallest electrical line item on a Geelong bathroom reno and the one most often forgotten until it is too late. A dedicated GPO behind the wall, roughed in by the A-grade electrician at carpentry stage, is what separates a flush, compliant finish from a surface-mounted cord taped to the skirting. Here is exactly how it goes in, when, and why the timing is non-negotiable.

When the carpenter finishes framing the new bathroom wall and before any lining goes on, the A-grade electrician arrives to rough in every electrical point in the room. The towel rail GPO is one of those points, and on every Geelong bathroom we build it is run as a dedicated final sub-circuit from the switchboard back to the rail location. That means a new circuit breaker on the board (typically a 10A C-curve MCB combined with a Type A RCD), a dedicated cable pulled through the frame, and a single GPO set in the stud bay at low level behind where the rail will eventually mount.
Why the GPO sits behind the rail.
A visible cord running from a wall-mounted heated rail down to a floor-level power-point looks exactly as bad as it sounds and is one of the most common compromises we see on Geelong DIY-finished bathrooms. AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules) requires fixed appliances in wet areas to be wired in concealed final sub-circuits with the connection point inside the wall. The dedicated GPO sits behind the rail in the stud cavity, accessible via a small removable cover or matched to the rail's own junction box. The wall lines up flush, no flex cord visible, and the rail can be hard-isolated at the switchboard for service or fault.
The carpentry-stage rough-in window.
The electrician's first site visit on a typical Geelong bathroom job is after the carpenter has finished framing and before the wall lining goes on. That is the only window where the cables can be run through the studs, the GPO boxes can be set, and the rough-in can be inspected before it gets buried. By the time the waterproofer arrives the wall has been lined, the membrane has gone on, and the tile has gone over the top - access to the cavity is over. Forget the towel rail GPO at carpentry stage and the options become bad: a surface-mounted GPO at the floor with a visible cord, or tearing out a freshly-tiled wall to fish a new cable.
Coastal-salt corrosion: rail material matters.
On bathrooms we build along the Bellarine corridor through Ocean Grove, Barwon Heads, Torquay and Drysdale, the airborne salt loading is high enough year-round that the rail material genuinely matters. A chrome-plated mild-steel rail will start pitting within a few years; a 316 marine-grade stainless rail with a brushed finish (or a powder-coated 316 rail in a matte black) will outlast the bathroom. We default to 316 on any Bellarine or Surf Coast job and call it out in the spec for inland Geelong jobs too because the price difference at supply is small and the longevity difference is not.
Sizing the rail and choosing your warm-floor strategy.
The wattage difference between a 2-rail (around 80-100W) and a 5-rail (around 150-200W) is smaller than the brochure makes it sound, and on a timer-controlled 8-hour daily run the daily electricity cost difference is a handful of cents at current Victorian retail tariffs. What changes is drying capacity. A 5-rail will dry two adult bath towels overnight in a damp coastal-Geelong winter. A 2-rail will dry one. We size to the household: ensuite for two adults, 4-rail or 5-rail; family bathroom for four, 5-rail minimum; small powder-room-with-shower, 2-rail.
