Strip-out to fit-off, in the right order.
1. Design & selections
Before a tool comes out, we lock the layout and your selections — tiles, tapware, vanity, toilet, shower screen, heating and exhaust. Getting this right up front is what keeps a renovation on budget; mid-job changes are where bathroom projects blow out. For older Newtown and Belmont homes we’ll flag early whether the existing layout is worth keeping or whether moving the plumbing earns its cost.
2. Strip-out & rough-in
Full demolition back to stud and substrate, rubbish removed. This is also when the truth comes out — rotten bottom plates, perished old waterproofing, undersized or illegal old plumbing. Plumbing and electrical rough-in then go in to suit the new layout, by licensed trades.
3. Waterproofing (AS 3740)
The most important stage and the one most often cut. We prepare the substrate, install a membrane compliant with AS 3740:2021 (Waterproofing of domestic wet areas), and let it cure 24–48 hours before anything goes on top. The membrane is certified before tiling — non-negotiable.
4. Tiling
Wall and floor tiling with correct falls to the waste, proper adhesive and curing time, and mould-resistant grout and silicone suited to Geelong’s humidity. Niches, hobless shower bases and feature walls done as part of the plan, not bolted on.
5. Fit-off & handover
Vanity, toilet, screen, tapware, mirror, towel rails and exhaust all installed and tested. Final clean, a walk-through with you, and your paperwork: plumbing Compliance Certificate, waterproofing certificate and a written workmanship warranty.
Realistic Geelong pricing (2026)
- Budget / cosmetic refresh, small bathroom: $8,000–$15,000
- Standard full renovation (most Geelong homes): $14,000–$24,000
- Mid-range to larger main bathroom: $24,000–$30,000
- High-end / premium (stone, feature tiling, top fixtures): $35,000+
Labour is 40–50% of a bathroom budget, so the room size and the trades involved — not just the tiles — drive the price. We recommend allowing a 10–20% contingency for hidden damage common in older Geelong wet areas.
Why we don’t cut corners on waterproofing
The cheapest way to make a renovation look finished faster is to tile before the membrane has cured, or to skip stripping a failed old membrane and tile straight over it. Both look identical on handover day — and both fail within a couple of years, by which point the fix means ripping out a brand-new bathroom. We cure and certify every membrane to AS 3740 because doing it once, properly, is always cheaper than doing it twice.
VBA registered, insured, and certified.
Every full bathroom renovation we do is carried out by a VBA registered building practitioner, with domestic building insurance on work over $16,000, waterproofing certified to AS 3740 by a licensed waterproofer, and plumbing completed under a licensed plumber’s Compliance Certificate. That paperwork protects you — and it’s what separates a renovation that holds its value from one a building inspector flags at resale.
